This past summer in June, I was fortunate enough to travel to Los Cabos, Mexico for summer vacation. As I set foot into the hot, sun-kissed air, I randomly met a friendly woman on the way to my resort. Her bubbly spirit was so welcoming and once I had found out she was from Vancouver, we had an automatic connection. What I didn’t know about her, was that she is a local television personality.
She keeps you entertained with her flawless looks and charming personality on Leftcoast TV. Laurie Belle brings you exclusive interviews with celebrities, on arts, entertainment, lifestyle and fashion. Throughout her adventure in the entertainment industry, she has always exerted positive energy. Let’s get an inside look into how Laurie became a model and television personality.
1. How did you get your first “big break” as a model?
I don’t know. I think my first big break is now! Meeting with Jan Cooper of Pump records and Cooper Studios has been amazing as he is taking the show to greater heights. As a young girl I had always been involved in dancing, tap, jazz, ballet, and gymnastics. I was performing in a dance recital and a Pizzazz agency representative approached me about modeling and acting.
2. What are some of your unforgettable moments from modeling around the world?
I enjoyed doing different editorial campaigns. I have been featured in Jaqueline Conoir collections and have featured on several billboards and in commercials. It was very exciting to me. Working with many diverse people is so enriching. The clothes were just beautiful. It was especially wonderful to have all these designers and photographers, and make-up artists that had written such beautiful things about working with me when I was modeling. I recently have had the opportunity to be a spokes model for some amazing designers such as Malene Grotrian, Tracey Copeman of Narcissist, and most recently Rhea Moella of Moella Designs.
3. What do you think is the true definition of beauty?
I think the true definition of beauty is to be healthy. It is important to be beautiful on the inside too. Look at Angelina Jolie and the way she reaches out to the world always helping people in need. Being healthy of mind, body and spirit is essential to beauty. Being a well-balanced person is another key component. Remember, beauty comes in all types, ethnicities, shapes and sizes. We are all too hard on ourselves.
4. What makes you look and feel beautiful?
I feel most beautiful when I am wearing something luxurious and girly. I am also at my best when I am happy, when I am loved, when I have helped someone and when I have been to the gym and worked out (laughs). I feel best when I am enjoying life with those I love. When I am having fun.
5. What beauty products are must-haves for you-that you can’t leave the house without?
I really love the natural look when I am not filming or at red carpet functions but I can’t do without skin cream (SPF), lip-gloss, (Light pinks or peaches), lipstick, blush, and eyebrow pencil to fill in the sparse areas.
6. You’re not only a beautiful face in front of the camera, you have also pursued an education, why was that important to you?
You are so sweet, thank you. As I said earlier it is important to be well balanced in life. It doesn’t matter what career you embark on, having an education is empowering. I had someone very special to me influence my decision to focus on finishing my degrees. I will forever be thankful for that. I have studied diverse subjects from psychology/marketing and hold a Business Degree and a M.ED.
7. How did you work against the negative aspects in the modeling and entertainment industry?
That’s a good question. Being in the entertainment industry you have to be smart about your choices. I have always applied a good dose of laughter to any stress I have encountered. I try and steer clear of negative energies or situations. One thing that has been a constant in the industry, although it is improving, is the need to be thin. I am curvy and I am tall. I am happy with that because I am healthy. I have worked in the industry and have been lucky this way. I think COCO Rocha standing up for her rights as a model was a brave and kind thing to do for all industry people. I love how designers of today are empowering women with their designs. Look at Malene Grotrian , who’s designs embrace the female body, curves and all.
8. How did you get into being a host and working in television?
My career started out in fashion then naturally developed into acting as I studied the craft with many great teachers, coaches, and schools. This led to various guest appearances. My agency Lloyd Talent was instrumental in creating a forum for me to be a Host and soon after an offer from Leftcoast TV appeared. I have been fortunate in the industry to have had things naturally progress. I attribute this to the adage that what is ‘meant to be is meant to be.’ I am very spiritual that way.
9. How does it feel standing on a red carpet in a gorgeous gown interviewing celebrities?
It is really fun, exciting, and you feel alive. The celebrities are often gracious, some are nervous as the pressure to be “on” is there. It is my job to create that comfort level and get the best out of them. I am very playful this way. Overall I have had wonderful experiences with the Leo Awards, Vancouver International Film Festival, Vancouver Fashion Week, the Olympics red carpet galas and I look forward to future events too.
1 0 . If you were on the red carpet at the Oscars, what designer brand would you love to where?
Hmmm there are so many amazing designers as mentioned earlier, but I really adore Betsey Johnson as she has fresh, colorful, vibrant clothing, and really, any designer who cartwheels down the catwalk just exudes fun! Of course the exquisite Versace or Galliano! I would possibly use an up and coming designer like Marley Davis. I like unique.
11.Who has been your favourite celebrity to interview on Leftcoast TV and why?
There have been many great moments and celebrities. I would have to say my favorite would be Gene Simmons (Simmons Family Jewels) and of KISS. He is just such a star, so magnanimous, funny, cool and I really respect him for taking the time before his concert to chat with me at TOJOS. Also Shannon Tweed was lovely and other members of KISS. They were all great! COCO Rocha is another favorite interviewee, as; she was sweet, kind, classy and epitomizes beauty on the inside and outside. Oh can I mention I really adored having Leo Award winning Actor David Richmond Peck on. He was great fun on our ‘Get with the Stars’ segment.
12.What kind of TV shows do you watch and are addicted too?
hmmm, I love Seinfeld, Without a Trace, Frasier, 90210 , two and a half men, Melrose Place, and Desperate Housewives.
1 3 . Do you have any advice for young girls who are aspiring to be a model or television host?
Yes, I do. Be true to yourself and if this is the career you want then go for it! Be smart, be kind and educate yourselves in any field you are interested in. Find mentors and good role models. Above all, have fun! If you are not enjoying yourself then what really is the point?
1 4 . Is there anyone in your life who has been a role model and a source of guidance to you?
So many people have guided me, supported me and inspired me. I would have to say my parents have been extremely influential in the person I am today. I love my family, my sister, my brother, nieces and nephews. I love them all, and to all my great friends.
1 5 . What is the next step for you in your career?
‘Get With the Stars’ is the newest segment on Leftcoast TV. We feature a celebrity, a famous chef, and me. Next step in my career is to forge ahead with the TV show, I will be doing some MC appearances and some acting offers are being presented. I am always into fashion of course; so, expect to see me at Vancouver Fashion Week, also at Vancouver International Film Festivals and more.
